Make your first planning conversation more useful.

A clear question and an organized picture of your finances are more useful than a perfect spreadsheet.

Describe the decision in one sentence

Try this structure: I am deciding whether to do something, by a particular date, because something has changed. If there is no deadline, say so. Identify what a useful answer would help you do.

List the assumptions you are uncertain about. A planning conversation is often most useful when it separates confirmed facts, estimates and preferences.

Create an inventory before collecting documents

List the types of accounts, income sources, debts, insurance and existing planning documents that may relate to the question. You do not need to put account numbers or passwords in that inventory.

The actual documents needed depend on the agreed scope. Use an approved secure channel when one is provided. Do not send identity documents, tax returns or account credentials through an unverified website form.

Agree on the output

Ask what you will receive, what analysis is included, what it is expected to cost and when the work will be complete. Identify any questions that belong with your CPA or attorney.

At the end, a practical action list should distinguish what you will do, what the adviser will do and what requires further information.
